Iconic Cartoon Homes: Animation's Most Famous Houses

I collect cartoon houses.
Not toys of cartoon houses.
Not blueprints.
Not tasteful coffee-table books about coffee-tables.
I mean I sit there, pause cartoons, stare at fictional buildings, and think things like:
There is absolutely no way that staircase fits inside that house.
And then I investigate.
This all started with Hey Arnold!
I was watching it one night, drinking a Bawls — yes, Bawls, because moo — when I started looking a little too closely at the Sunset Arms boarding house.
How many rooms are in there?
Why does it seem bigger on the inside?
Where exactly is Arnold’s bedroom in relation to the roof?
Does Grandpa Phil have permits for any of this?
These were supposed to be passing thoughts.
They were not.
Several hours later I had screenshots, tabs open everywhere, a growing folder of cartoon houses, and what I can only describe as a developing situation.
So now we have Cartoon Cribs.
This is where I keep the houses, apartments, castles, sewer hideouts, treehouses, laboratories, underwater fruit and other places cartoon characters somehow call home.
There’s SpongeBob’s pineapple.
The Proud Family house.
Castle Grayskull.
Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends.
The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ sewer lair, which I assume Zillow would describe as “unique subterranean living with excellent city access.”
There are more than 60 of these things here now.
I did not plan for that.
Some of them are beautiful. Some are ridiculous. Some make absolutely no architectural sense once you look at them for more than six seconds.And that’s the fun part.
Cartoon houses cheat constantly.
Windows appear and disappear.
Bedrooms migrate.
Hallways lead places they physically cannot lead.
A tiny suburban house will suddenly contain a basement, laboratory, guest room, second staircase and apparently three additional zip codes.
Nobody explains this.
Nobody seems concerned.
I am concerned.
So I started documenting them.
If you grew up watching cartoons, you’ll probably recognize a bunch of these immediately. Others might unlock some deeply buried Saturday-morning memory you haven’t accessed since 1998.
And if you’re the kind of person who has ever paused a cartoon because you suddenly needed to know whether the front door was on the left or the right...
